COLLIE Golf Club president Steven Ireland triumphed in last Saturday's 18-hole stroke event, sponsored by Collie Freightlines. Looking trim, taut and terrific, Ireland claimed his first Saturday victory in more than four years. Apart from a couple of blemishes, Ireland played a good brand of golf generally to win the event with a nett round of 71. On the same score but relegated to the runner-up position on a countback was the consistent Brad Swan who is also looking in good shape these days. Captain Clayton Flynn was one shot behind the leaders, coming third on nett 72, as was the long hitting Colin Giblett, finishing fourth, also in a countback situation.
A further shot away was Greg Bell, on 73 nett, then came Bruce Roberts and Stephen Farquhar, each returning 74 nett. Garry Beard again won the best gross award with his 77 shots off the stick. Novelty winners were: Nearest the pins – Trevor Lawrence (4 and 7), Stephen Farquhar (14); Longest first putts – Doug Bailey (6), Eric Annandale (18); Long drive on no.15 – Doug Bailey.
Thursday's nine-hole scroungers event was won in grand style by Rob Loxton with the great score of 23 points. Two shots adrift, in the runner up position was Ian Shannon, on 21 points while Bruce Jackson and Gary Old were tied third with 20 points apiece.
Rounding out the vouchers were Colin Giblett, on 18 points, followed by George Newlands, Brian Banks, Graham Williams, John Michalak and Chris Stewart, all on 17 points.
Novelties were won by John Suckling (4), Bruce Jackson (6) and Ray Cooper (9). Chris Stewart's 38 off-the-stick earned him the day's best gross score.
Jim Moyses returned to the winners' list albeit by a countback from Rodney Miller in last Tuesday's leisure day event. Both players returned the good score of 37 points, one shot better than Narrogin's Pat Coll who finished third with his 36 points. Alan Kent was next, returning 35 points, followed by Fred Bronickis, Alex Tweedie and Peter Coombs on 34 points. Joe Italiano, Mun Lye and Roger Hunter rounded out the vouchers with their returns of 33 points. Graham Williams won the best vet award for his 35 point finish.
Novelties went to Greg Moyle (4), Colin Giblett (7), David Laird (9 and 14) and Alan Kent (18).
This Saturday's event will be an 18 hole stableford, sponsored by Bunbury Honda. This Sunday's Stoney Creek event will go ahead with a 10 am start. Scroungers as usual today with leisure day next Tuesday.
