The Shire of Collie is seeking expressions of interest from groups or individuals who are interested in taking on the lease of the historic Buckingham Hall.
The former school building is located on Griggs Road, Buckingham and was constructed from Jarrah and iron in the 1950s.
Shire of Collie Director Development Services Andrew Dover said the shire hasn’t received any interest from groups who would like to take the hall over yet, but interested groups or individuals have until June 30 to submit their proposals.
“Normally expressions of interest would come in toward the end of the notice period as community groups/businesses need time for the relevant people to meet and make a decision and then prepare their submission,” he said.
Mr Dover said the building was part of the history of Buckingham and is important to be preserved for future generations.
“The best way to preserve historical buildings is to find a sustainable use which will ensure that upgrades and maintenance occur as required,” he said.
“To find a suitable sustainable use for the building, the Shire is open to any and all expressions of interest including from community groups and businesses.
“Given the rural location, Buckingham Hall is ideal for an outback pub which have proved to be very successful in other places throughout Australia, alternatively it could be a church or scout camp which have proved popular elsewhere.”
“Once expressions of interest are received, the proposed uses will be considered by Council to ensure that the use is suitable for the building and will be acceptable for the local community in Buckingham.”
The hall is currently in a state of disrepair and requires repairs and maintenance.
Possible shire funding may be available to assist with the required repairs for the right group or individual.
