Unsecured loads on the back of vehicles are going to be targeted by police in the coming months.
Collie Senior Sergeant Heath Soutar said it was important to secure loads such as firewood on the back of a ute or trailer, for the safety of other road users.
“We all know how people like to go out and get their firewood, they should always have it covered and make sure it is secure, so that any bits of wood don’t fall off onto the road and hit other vehicles,” he said.
Collie police are investigating a burglary that occurred at a home in Atkinson Street south over the weekend.
Senior Sergeant Soutar said the rear of the property was broken into and as a result of inquiries some of the property was recovered and a person has been charged with this offence.
“One person has been charged with the offence, we are looking for another person who we believe is involved and may have left town. We are also still looking for some of the stolen property,” he said.
“The owners were away at the time and it looks like other people may have heard that the premises were vacant and on Saturday police got a call to attend because a person was seen acting suspiciously and going into the rear yard.
As a result of that person witnessing that, we attended and the person before he could break in ran off and police chased him in the pouring rain. We ended up catching the person nearby.”
Senior Sergeant Soutar said it was due to the good work of neighbours informing police of suspicious behaviour that the person involved was caught by police.
“This person was charged with a trespass offence, and that was only through the good work of people keeping an eye out on the premises and then informing us and the quick response from the officers involved,” he said.
“They probably prevented the person from breaking into the premises again and he was charged with a trespass offence. “That was great work by neighbours, people keeping an eye out and informing police.”
On Saturday, July 15, a St John Ambulance officer was assaulted at the Collie District Hospital. “Unfortunately one of our ambulance officers was assaulted. A patient attempted to spit on them and police,” Senior Sergeant Soutar said.
“Inquiries are continuing in this case, we are getting the CCTV footage of the offence and the person who was involved in that will be facing charges.
Any assaults on nursing staff, St John Ambulance officers or any of our volunteer staff won’t be tolerated and it’s a serious assault when it is on one of these people.”
