Liquor outlets in Port Hedland were forced to close on Tuesday after a spate of alcohol-fuelled violence overnight left one person in an induced coma and another with a stab wound.
The ban comes a day after WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson called for a Pilbara-wide permanent ban on full-strength alcohol sales in what he called an attempt to reduce child neglect and abuse.
South Hedland acting Senior Sergeant Andrew Ramsden told local radio station Spirit Hedland some in the community may be inconvenienced by Tuesday's ban but that the bigger issue police were trying to tackle was "more than just the person who doesn't have a beer tonight".
"All incidents last night, bar one or two, were not just alcohol-related, [they were] alcohol-fuelled violent crime," he said.
"As a result the police under Section 114 for the Liquor Control Act, are imposing liquor restrictions for the next 24 hours from 11am today."
South Hedland emergency services overnight were stretched to the limit as St John Ambulance paramedics attended several incidents including a woman in her 40s who had been stabbed and a man in his 30s who had been struck over the head with a piece of concrete.
Senior Sergeant Ramsden said the man had been placed into an induced coma.
During the ban, community members will only be able to purchase mid-strength alcohol at licensed restaurants alongside a meal.
All takeaway liquor outlets have been closed with the ban to be reassessed on Wednesday morning.
It is not the first time alcohol sales have been banned in the Pilbara town.
Takeaway sales were restricted in December following fears of civil disorder in the wake of vision of South Hedland death-in-custody victim Ms Dhu's treatment while in custody being publicly released.
In the days after the release of the footage, police were swamped with dozens of calls for assistance and attended 10 significant assaults.
Town of Port Hedland mayor Camillo Blanco has long advocated for a stronger police presence in South Hedland and in 2016 began releasing CCTV footage to the media to demonstrate the severity of the violence in public places.
