It might sound like a tall tale but someone did actually go to great lengths to make it seem true.
WA Police have confirmed to WAtoday they were able to recover a 12-foot giraffe statue that was stolen from a Perth pet store on Saturday evening.
The towering fibre glass giraffe inexplicably went missing from the Bird and Fish Place pet store in Wattle Grove after the store closed, before staff realised and reported the theft to Cannington police officers.
Staff reported a hole in their back fence had been cut out by thieves in order to remove the giraffe, and the store offered a $3400 reward for its safe return.
Sergeant Paul Crawshaw said his station sent out a call on social media asking the public to keep their eyes open for the towering statue.
"After posting it to social media, its location was reported to us by a member of the public," he said.
It is understood the giraffe was found at a property in Beckenham after a resident reported spotting the statue in their neighbour's backyard to police.
At around 10pm on Saturday evening officers executed a search warrant at the home and returned the giant animal back to its owners.
"It would have been a tall order for the crooks to get away with stealing this fella... they must have had their head in the clouds!" the police post said.
It is unknown if anyone has been charged with the theft.
