Collie police officers will soon be able to carry out drug tests – on any driver, at any time.
In the past, local police have been able to carry out random breath tests for alcohol, but have had to rely on equipment and staff from Perth to carry out drug tests.
But Collie Police Senior Sergeant Heath Soutar said that was all about change.
“We will have the ability to target drug driving, which we are really looking forward to,” he said.
“Once everything is in place, that will be ongoing and we can do it permanently after that.”
Sen. Sgt. Soutar said the testing would be carried out on the side of the road, just as it was for drink driving.
“And we will still be targeting drink driving in the coming weeks,” he said.
