Darkan farmer and inventor Raymond Harrington was recognised for his invention which may reduce the need for herbicides in farming at the annual Western Australia Australian of the Year awards.
Mr Harrington was a nominee for 2018 Western Australia Senior Australian of the Year and attended the awards ceremony at Government House in Perth on Wednesday, November 22.
He was among four nominees for the award, one of four Western Australia category awards, which also included Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Local Hero.
Mr Harrington, 70, is the brains behind an invention which destroys weed seeds during harvest.
When Mr Harrington’s Harrington Seed Destructor is attached to modern grain harvesters, it pulverises 95 per cent of weed seeds collected in the chaff which is spread back over the paddocks at harvest, reducing the weed seed bank and weeds in the following year’s crop.
Kathleen Mazzella was named the Western Australia Senior Australian of the Year for 2018 for her work in establishing the Gynaecological Awareness Information Network.
