Seniors Christmas Celebrations: Nearly 100 seniors from around West Arthur had a lovely Christmas lunch on November 23 at the Darkan Sports Club. Community volunteers prepared and served a three-course lunch and there was wonderful entertainment by the Pre-primary and Year 1 class from Darkan Primary School. There was a great festive atmosphere and a lot of catching up done at this great annual event.
Cottage Homes Open Day: West Arthur Cottage Homes invites you to a Home Open at the new West Arthur Cottage Homes units at 1 Burrowes St, Darkan on Sunday, December 10 from 10am to 12 noon. Interschool Carnival: Darkan Primary School joined with the seven other schools that make up the Wattle Division in the Interschool Carnival at River Valley Primary school in Burekup recently and once again Darkan children were outstanding, with their participation, sportsmanship, behaviour and encouragement of each other. Congratulations to Lexi Hulse for being awarded Junior Champion Girl for the day. A number of the children placed in a variety of events and can all be very proud of their efforts.
Riding to Success: Kelsey Lubcke recently competed at Albany Agricultural Show with both her ponies Apple Jack Jay and Jejucha Pandamonium. She had a successful show winning Champion Junior Handler, Reserve Champion Welsh Youngstock and Reserve Champion Riding Pony in the morning. She then continued in the afternoon, riding Jack Jay and winning Champion Small Show Hunter and taking out The Great Southern Small Show Hunter of the Year.
Local WA Senior of the Year Nomination: Congratulations to Shire president Raymond Harrington OAM, farmer and inventor who was a nominee in the 2018 West Australian Senior Australian of the Year award and among the final four contenders. The award went to women’s heath advocate Kathleen Mazeella OAM.
Works and Projects Update: Maintenance graders are working on the west side of the Shire. Works will continue on Bowelling Duranillin Road widening and commence on the floodway on Bowelling McAlinden Road. Installation of signage on the Darkan information bay will be completed this week.
Christmas Shed Market: The last Shed Market for the year will be on Sunday, December 10 from 10am. Come along and enjoy a morning tea and try your luck in the multi-prize Christmas raffle. If selling on the day please bring along your own table and chair.
Tennis Inter-Club Challenge: Tennis will start Friday, December 1 from 7pm after the junior basketball grand final. The first event is an inter-club challenge with all players and from Tarwonga, Moodiarrup and Williams Tennis Club invited to join the Darkan crew and stay for dinner available to purchase on the night.
Lions Hearing Van Visit: The Lions Club of West Arthur recently hosted the mobile screening van at the Shed during the November markets. More than 20 people had their hearing checked and the specialists in the van enjoyed their run for the day into the country.
Australia Day Awards: Do you know an outstanding member or group in West Arthur? Bronze Medallion Course: There will be a two-day full and requalification Bronze Medallion course on December 9 and 10 starting at 10am at the Darkan swimming pool. Your contribution of $80 for full course or $65 for requalification will be donated to the West Arthur Shire to go towards a defibrillator for the swimming pool. “It’s In The Bag” for 2017: The West Arthur CRC is once again running this campaign for Christmas. You are asked to donate an old handbag containing items that women use such as tampons, hair and skin products etc. If you start buying one item now each time you shop and you won’t even notice an extra item on your grocery bill. Thanks to those who have already dropped off some items. If you don’t have an old handbag you can still drop items in for us at 27 Burrowes St, Darkan to add to the spare handbags we have here.
