GRIFFIN Coal has denied rumours that 30 per cent of its white collar workforce would be laid off.
Rumours have been circulating that up to 30 per cent or about 27 office staff, would be laid off.
General manager of employee and industrial relations Chris Godfrey said the "rumour" was not true and the company was undergoing a structural review across all operations.
"We are not laying anyone off at this stage," he said.
Mr Godfrey said the company held a staff meeting last Friday to set the record straight and inform employees about the review.
"Obviously that (the 30 per cent cut back) is a total rumour," he said.
"We are obviously looking at maximising efficiencies. It is a standard procedure to ensure we are getting the most out of our people."
Mr Godfrey said until the review was complete no decisions would be made.
"In any restructure, or when you are looking at efficiencies, we may end up increasing staff, but I doubt that," he said.
The review was likely to be complete in three to four weeks, he said.
AMWU State secretary Steve McCartney said Griffin was telling "porky pies".
"They told our convener that there would be a 30 per cent cut to staff, to white collar workers, but that blue collar workers have nothing to worry about," Mr McCartney said.
He said it would be interesting if the company had now changed its scope.
Mr McCartney said the union would send its conveners in to find out if the company had changed its position.
"If they want to talk about redundancies they need to talk to us," he said.
