THE Collie Men’s volleyball team has won the B-grade men’s Coal Cup grand final on Sunday for the first time in the history of the iconic tournament.
The 28th annual Collie Coal Cup tournament was held at the weekend with a total 42 teams participating.
Club president Kyle Hulls said eight teams were turned away this year due to the tournament being at capacity.
“We run the only regional volleyball tournament in WA and it has always been a very popular weekend,” Hulls said.
“People tend to dress up outrageous costumes and have a lot of fun playing.”
Teams travelled from Albany, Busselton, Bunbury, Perth and surrounds to participate.
Hulls was also a member of the Collie men’s B-grade team which won the grand final.
“It was about time a local team picked up a win and I was stoked to be part of it,” Hulls said.
“The blokes played so well all weekend and really deserved to win after making it to the grand final last year and narrowly losing.”
The other local team, Collie Cops and Robbers, finished third in the women’s B-grade after losing the semi-final by one point.
The Coal Cup trophy, which was awarded to the team which showed great sportsmanship, commitment to the game and umpiring duty, performance and uniform, went to the Mighty Swans women’s B-grade team.
