The Collie Art Gallery has started reducing its carbon footprint with the installation of solar panels.
When the power bills started wracking up for the gallery the board decided to apply for a grant to Coal Miners Welfare Board.
Collie Art Gallery board member Don Clark said electricity was its second biggest expense so it was the need for solar panels was more than environmental.
He said there was a delay in the approval of the grant due to state government election in March.
However, they were approved for a grant just under $20,000 three months ago and they were able to install the panels last week.
Mr Clark said the gallery was hoping it would save around $3000 a year as a result of the installation.
He said the solar panels were commercial quality with 15 kilowatt system.
“Sunwise Energy did a very professional job with the installation and we think it will make a big difference,” Mr Clark said.
The Collie Art Gallery is currently hosting Periclesian Habitats by well known Australian artist Leon Pericles.
Pericles creates fictitious environments based on a remote country town of Widjimorphup. The exhibition runs until Sunday November 12.
