The Collie Power Soccer Club has scored a big win with the biggest name in women’s soccer set to come to town to host a training session.
Sam Kerr will visit Collie on Sunday, January 21 to hold a training session with the club’s women’s team.
Collie Power Soccer Club president Shane Cole said it was coup for the club to get a player of Kerr’s quality to come down and help coach the players.
“She’s the biggest name in women’s sport in Australia at the moment and probably one of the best players in the world,” he said.
“We thought we’d try to get her down to Collie to promote the women’s side.”
Mr Cole said he was hopeful that the presence of the Matildas star would inspire players to join the club.
“Even just to get her down here for 45 minutes for the girls, it’ll provide such a confidence boost,” he said.
“We’ve got players who haven’t played in years thinking about coming back, so hopefully this will give them a push.
“We just want to build our numbers and get people interested in the game again.”
Mr Cole said the club will also hold a Q and A session with Sam Kerr at the Collie Ridge Motel that evening, with a memorabilia auction also taking place to raise money for the club. He said it is a ticketed event, but that the club still has a couple of tickets available.
The Q and A session will be hosted by Kerr’s brother, former West Coast Eagles star Daniel Kerr.
Mr Cole said he wanted to thank everyone involved in getting the event organised.
“A lot of planning has gone into this. Our committee has been brilliant and the local businesses around town threw in a bit of sponsorship to help get her here,” he said.
“It’s been unreal, the support we’ve had has been second to none.”
