Fifty girls from high schools around the South West were given the opportunity to experience what careers are available in mining recently.
South 32 Worsley Alumina held their second Work Inspirations program during the first week of December, where the students were given four days at the refinery to gather some hands-on experience.
The program, which South 32 Worsley Alumina organises in conjunction with the WA Department of Education, allows the students to follow workers and learn skills needed for a range of roles in the field of mining.
It was the second time the program was held, with the first 50 high school girls taking part in the inaugural round of the initiative back in April last year.
For the most recent program, students were given the opportunity to spend time out in the field with operators, maintenance crews, laboratory services technicians, emergency services and nursing teams.
They also got the chance to work with technology, finance and business services.
The program also included personality preference exercises and career talks, to help showcase potential careers in mining.
South32 Worsley Alumina Vice President Operations Dino Otranto said it was important to show students what opportunities are available to them once they finish school.
“Working with young people while they consider their study paths and future careers is very important in helping them understand the many opportunities on offer,” he said.
“Our people volunteer to guide and mentor the students, providing inspiration and encouragement way beyond the classroom experience.
“We believe this is key to the success of the program."
Mr Otranto also said the organisation was proud to provide local students the opportunity to take part in the program.
The two rounds of the program that were run in 2017 saw 100 schoolgirls selected from a range of high schools around Collie, Bunbury and Harvey.
The students were selected through an application process completed through their schools’ Vocational Education and Training coordinators.
South32 Worsley Alumina will be holding the program again this year, with each round of the program able to accommodate up to 50 students.
