Some of Collie’s best bakers put on their aprons and whipped up their best pavlovas on Monday, January 22 for the Collie Mail’s Australia Day pavlova competition.
Bakers competed against one another in two separate categories, battling it out for the title of best basic pavolva with no decorations and the best decorated pavlova.
The judging panel for the competition consisted of Family Favourites cookbook co-creator Mary Coverley, Betta Home Living’s Donna Briggs and Crank’n Cycles’ Erik Mellegers.
There were several entries for both categories, with all pavlovas having their taste, texture and appearance rated out of 10.
Raewyn Jones was crowned the winner of the best basic pavlova and received a Breville Fast Slow Pro from Collie Betta Home Living.
The judging in the decorated category was tight, with Brian Kippin narrowly taking out the title. He received a homewares gift hamper from Cheeky Squirrel.
Mr Kippin said he was excited to win the competition because he had been making pavlovas since he was young.
“There’s an art to making a good pavlova,” he said.
Mrs Coverley said Mr Kippin’s pavlova, which was decorated with a range of berries, had a nice shape and flavour.
