Collie local Tony Briggs has said he feels ‘honoured’ and ‘excited’ to be taking part in the Queen’s Baton Relay, ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
Mr Briggs will run with the baton on Friday, February 23, with his 250m leg taking place along Ocean Drive in Bunbury.
Mr Briggs said he was nominated for the event by his wife Margaret for his 50 years of involvement in sport in Collie, particularly in hockey and speedway.
Mr Briggs, who also carried the Olympic Torch when it came through the South West in 2000, said he hadn’t decided on how he was going to approach the relay.
“If you run it only lasts a minute but if you walk it, it can last two or three minutes,” he said.
“There’s a roundabout where I start, so I might even do a couple of laps of that as well to get a bit of extra time in.”
Mr Briggs also said that it a shame that more Collie people weren’t involved.
“There’s a lot of people that really deserve to be a part of it. [The baton] really should be coming through Collie as well,” he said.
He also said that he hopes to see some familiar faces when he makes his run.
“It would be great to get some people down there to represent Collie,” he said.
