Ahead of the WA Day Long Weekend, RAC has revealed road fatalities are almost 10 per cent higher than the same time last year, with regional WA road fatalities 17 per cent higher.
RAC corporate affairs manager Will Golsby said long weekends provided a welcome opportunity for a trip to destinations across the state, but they were also some of the deadliest times of the year on our roads.
“West Australians should take extra care behind the wheel this WA Day long weekend and prioritise the safety of themselves, loved ones and fellow road users above all else,” he said.
“The rate of road deaths in regional areas is five times higher than Perth metropolitan and this year has been especially devastating, with the number of people killed on regional roads 17 per cent higher than this time last year.
“With thousands of additional drivers preparing to travel on unfamiliar roads, it’s never been more important to avoid complacency and concentrate on arriving at your destination safely.
“We encourage drivers to take their time while travelling, be courteous to one another, avoid driving when tired, and ditch all distractions.”
Drivers are also reminded double demerits take effect from Friday, June 1, through to Monday, June 4.
