Minister for Sport and Recreation Mick Murray visited the Collie PCYC last week to launch the FreeG Kids program.
FreeG is a program developed by Gymnastics Australia that combines elements of gymnastics, obstacle training and freestyle movement, with the new program catered specifically to children aged between three and 11 years old.
Mr Murray said he was delighted to see children express themselves while being active.
“FreeG can also change people’s perception that gymnastics is not just an Olympic sport but one that provides fundamental movement skills for children to be able to go into any sport,” he said.
Collie PCYC gymnastics coach Kristy Milne said the club was excited to expand their ‘street gym’ classes, which they began running during the fourth term last year.
“We did our FreeG training and then ran our street gym class ... for anyone that was interested,” she said.
“It's a great way to engage youth in a fun way and in a safe environment in the gym so they're not out on the streets doing it and if they are they've learnt the safety side of things here.”
The Wednesday class is currently full but Mrs Milne said they already have a few children already on the waiting list for another class and would open more classes if the demand was there.
