Mental health education was the focus of the day as mental health support service Lamp visited the Collie Valley Child and Parent Centre recently.
With school holidays in full swing, about 15 children took part in the centre’s trial of The Unicorn Project program that helps primary school-aged children support their own and their peers’ mental health on Thursday, July 5.
The Unicorn Project coordinator Paula Farley said the program was a direct response to a ‘gap in the community’.
“It was in direct response to a gap in the community for primary-aged children having mental health issues,” she said.
“It is an early intervention program ... and the idea behind it is to use young people’s imaginations to help them access their own skills and strategies to support themselves as they get older.
“The unicorn is the hook for that.
“From that what we do is we try to get the kids to understand that by using their imagination they can keep themselves well.”
