Collie’s new Leo Club, a youth organisation of Lions Clubs International which encourages youth to develop leadership qualities by participating in social service activities is hoping to see more people join their club.
Aged for youth between 12 – 18, the club is free to join as the Lions Club covers costs.
Lions Club of Collie secretary Liz Hoare said she helps mentor the club along with president Ray Zinner and membership Greg Bates.
“We are just there to supervise but this is their club and they have to make all the decisions, finances and minutes. We would welcome any youth who were interested in joining the club,” she said.
On Monday night the Collie club recently had their first excursion and induction for its members.
“We had eight youths come with us to see the Waroona Leo Club and just to see if it was something that they wanted to do,” she said.
Collie Leo Club member Connor Harrison said he enjoyed the excursion and joined the group to help out his local community.
“We got to see how Waroona functioned as a group and it was really worthwhile. If more members join we will be able to do more stuff for the community and help out,” he said.
Mrs Hoare said once they charter the club they would hold an election to vote in a president, secretary and treasurer.
“If this takes off as well as we think it’s going to take off then we will look at doing a Branch Club for people aged 18 – 25,” she said.
The next Leo meeting will be held at MacDonalds from 5:45 – 7pm on September 5.
