The Shire of Collie has commissioned sport and recreation planning company Tredwell Management to conduct a feasibility study for a new indoor pool in Collie.
Back in January, the shire received a $150,000 grant from the state government to conduct the feasibility study which would investigate the possibility of constructing a 25 metre indoor pool in order to extend the swimming season.
Shire of Collie chief executive David Blurton said the shire had recently commissioned consultants to undertake the feasibility study.
“The study will assess the likely costs involved in construction and the ongoing costs to run such a facility,” he said.
“It will include a needs assessment to establish likely demand and expected use.
“It is important that this information is clearly understood prior to council progressing the project.”
Mr Blurton said public consultation, including a public meeting, would also take place before a decision was made.
The shire and Tredwell will host a community workshop at the Margaretta Wilson Centre on from 5pm to 6.30pm on Wednesday, September 27, where the community can come and share their views on the project.
The community has also been invited to share their opinions and ideas through an online survey, which can be completed until Sunday, September 16.
Mr Blurton also said he expected the study would be completed within a ‘couple of months’.
Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray said the feasibility study was important in order to make sure any future facility is of the highest possible standard.
“It is important for the people of Collie that we have a well-planned facility in conjunction with the local swimming club and Shire of Collie,” he said.
“It was pleasing to be able to hand over the grant to the shire for the planning of this project.
“It is now up to the shire if they want to progress this to the next stage.”
Mr Murray and Premier Mark McGowan promised $2 million in funding towards building the new pool in January 2017 if WA Labor won last year’s state election.
The Collie Mineworkers Memorial Pool previously underwent a $3.6 million upgrade in 2015, which included the refurbishment of the 50m pool and the construction of a leisure pool.
