Collie Adventure Race secures funding from South32

This year’s event will be called the South32 Collie Adventure Race and is scheduled for October 13 and 14.

The long course race is a five-stage marathon relay and includes cyclists, canoeists, swimmers, mountain bike riders and runners. A short course event and a junior race are also held over the weekend.

South32 Worsley Alumina Lead Corporate Affairs Mark Worthington said the company was proud to support events that market Collie as a tourist destination.

“We seek to invest in events that bring visitors to Collie and market the town as a tourist destination,” he said. 

“With such scenic waterways and bushland in and around Collie, the Adventure Race is a unique event that really showcases the natural environment.

“New competitors, returning competitors and their family, friends and support crews are a great voice to promote Collie by word of mouth. I know that local service providers anticipate a busy weekend with so many extra visitors in town.

“We are proud to invest in the Collie Adventure Race and in turn help support local businesses,”

The South32 Collie Adventure Race is expected to attract between 400 and 500 competitors over the weekend and is hosted by the Collie Rotary Club. Other sponsors include Premier Coal, Bendigo Bank and the Shire of Collie.

Collie Rotary Club Adventure Race director Geoff Blackford said the club was calling for volunteers to help with the ‘busy weekend’.

“Any support from locals and community organisations is really appreciated,” he said.

“There are several roles like directional guides for competitors, traffic controllers, first aid and race management positions that we need to fill.”

The race is accepting entrants for the long-course race, which involves canoeing, mountain biking, swimming, road cycling and trail running, as well as the short course race and the junior race.
