Two locals have taken out the top spots in this year’s Performing Arts Competition as part of the many festivities of Festiv Arty.
Dancer Kate Pinneri was announced as the winner for her contemporary dance routine which she choreographed herself.
“All the performers did so well. It feels nice to win and I’m just feel super proud of myself,” Kate said.
The 15-year-old said she was born deaf but was still lucky enough to be able to dance because of her cochlear implants, which she got when she was just over one.
“I wouldn’t be dancing without them because I wouldn’t be able to hear the music,” she said.
“One day I hope to have my own dance school and teach different genres, as I have taught kids in the past.”
Thirteen-year-old singer Shae Digney was announced as the runner-up after she sung Everybody Hurts by R.E.M and played guitar.
“I started playing the guitar when I was eight-years-old and even before that I used to just sing. Music has always been something that I wanted to do. Coming runner-up is really cool and exciting,” she said.
“It was a really cool experience to go through all the heats and into that final performance. It’s really good if you play an instrument to showcase that, even if you don’t win just having that experience of performing in front of people is a great way to get your confidence up.”
Shae said she wants to try and get into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and make music her career.
