ValleyView Residence executive manager Joy Halleron recently presented at the Alzheimer’s WA ‘We’ in Dementia Community Services Symposium on Tuesday, October 16 at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Ms Halleron was asked to present on behalf of Riverview Residence in relation to the positive changes made at ValleyView, particularly with respect to the dementia specific environment.
In November 2016 ValleyView received a $30,000 grant through the Royalties for Regions to specifically enhance the lives and well-being of the residents living with dementia.
Presenting to over 350 delegates from all areas of community and residential aged care services Ms Halleron said Collie was highlighted as a welcoming, inclusive and vibrant community who cares passionately about the lives of their aged Australian residents.
“The grant allowed the journey of change to commence with the strategic plan of the organisation now highlighting more positive change in the future,” she said.
“Residents at ValleyView living with dementia now enjoy a central courtyard that opens up and allows residents to wander and socialise together in a safe stimulating environment.
“The houses now have decals on every residents bedroom door which depicts a door similar to everyone’s front door to their own home. They now have pots growing their own veggies, fruits and herbs.
“Support from Collie community allowed ValleyView to put up peg boards that the residents painted along the corridors covered in hats, bags, scarves and jewellery. They also donated 1950/60 style furniture and even a piano all reminiscent of our residents own family home.”
