The kindergarten students at St Brigid’s Primary School opened their pizza shop Yum! for business last Thursday, October 18.
On the day each child was given a role to play to make sure the business was a success.
Parents and the team from the Domino’s Collie store also came to Yum! for lunch, paying $5 per pizza.
St Brigid’s Primary School kindergarten teacher Hayley Digney said in term two the class was following an inquiry project where they went out on small excursions to various places in the community.
“The project involved learning about the town of Collie. We visited many places around town including the Collie Police Station, the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Coles and Domino’s,” she said.
“The kids were particularly inspired by the our Domino’s pizza visit. There they got to make their own pizza and were shown the process from start to finish and so we thought why not making our own pizza shop.”
Ms Digney said throughout last term the students learnt about what goes into running the shop.
“The kids had to come up with what to call their shop and they decided on Yum! as the name. They designed a shop front sign, logos, opening soon sign and open and closed sign and other advertising posters, then we realised we needed menus so we had to decide what kind of pizzas to make,” she said.
“They then had to learn how to make pizza dough, what toppings needed to go on the pizzas and how to make milkshakes and drinks to go with the meal and they learnt how to set up the shop. So we did each step on its own and today is a combination of everything together.
“It’s a great way to learn about time management, language, writing and recipes and because it’s so much fun they’re just really engaged.”
Ms Digney said the real highlight of the day was when the team from the Domino’s Collie store stopped by.
Domino’s Collie fanchisee Zen Frost said it was great to see the children being inspired by something they do.
“They came to visit us at the store and we really like to get out in the community so we thought we should come see what they have done today. It’s great pizza and they could probably go into competition with us,” he said.
Ms Digney said she was a little worried with doing it with a kindergarten class but said the shop turned out really well.
