B-grade
Collies B-grade side travelled down to Harvey on the weekend for their round 2 fixture.
With the first round being a washout, both teams were wanting to get the season off to a winning start on a rainy day.
Carrying on his form from last season, captain Greg Tomasini lost the toss and Collie were sent into bat on a tricky wicket.
Openers Brayden Kent and Bailey Moloney took the cautious approach early, but Kent was dismissed for four with a good catch from Harvey’s keeper.
This bought Mark Williams to the crease, who as usual made batting look easy from the start.
Moloney fell shortly after for a patient 18 after missing a straight one.
Liam Rueban, fresh off no training for two years came and went for a classy 1.
Greg Tomasini made his way to the middle immediately started playing his shots, and along with Williams started picking up the run rate.
Williams then picked out the fielder on the boundary and was on his way for a well made 47.
Matt Tanner was next in, getting a promotion from his usual spot at number 10.
With Tomasini doing the power hitting he was forced to work the singles supporting his captain something he isn’t known for.
At the end of the inning Tomasini finished on 79 not out and Tanner on 22 not out, with Collie 4/185.
Veteran medium/slow bowlers Jason Borrett and Steve Ireland took the new ball for Collie with immediate effect, ripping through the top order to have Harvey 5/50.
Ryan Loxton and Tyson Hayes kept the pressure on but Harvey were mounting a comeback with an 85-run partnership to give them a chance.
Tomasini’s form with the bat didn’t carry onto the field, putting down four chances behind the stumps.
Kent and Tanner came into the attack bowling the last 12 overs, and with light fading fast, Harvey needed 10 off the last over to win.
It was left to the Williams to bowl his only over for the game, fresh from sitting in slips most of the match.
He got the breakthrough Collie needed dismissing the dangerous Minella for a well made 78, from a great catch from Ireland.
Harvey only managed four runs from the next two balls to fall three runs short.
It was a good fighting win from the boys to start the new season.
Next week Collie take on Marist at Roche Park on Sunday starting at 10am. Or first home game of the year. Come on down and cheer on the boys.
