Scitech presented their new STEM careers show Beyond the Beaker to Collie Senior High School Year 7 to 10 students to inspire and inform secondary students about their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics enabled future.
The show covered topics of cutting edge technology such as self-driving cars and life-saving drones, big data, artificial intelligence and demonstrated how STEM can be a part of so many career avenues, from health and sports, to automation and the arts.
Scitech chief executive officer Ms Deb Hancock said the future of work is changing.
“A new workforce is taking shape with 75 percent of the fastest growing jobs requiring STEM skills. We need to ensure that Western Australians are prepared for these changes, which is why programs such as Beyond the Beaker are immensely important for secondary students transitioning into the workforce of tomorrow,” she said.
“Through relevant, engaging and hands-on programs, Scitech can demonstrate first hand vital STEM skills, how they apply and why students will need them as they consider their career pathway.”
Scitech STEM careers coordinator Hannah Hilbert-Wolf said she loves touring around to different schools and hearing what the students have to say and what’s concerning them about the future.
“We’re out here to let students know that they’ve got a lot of these skills and no matter what their strengths or weaknesses are you can acquire some of these skills and just place emphasis on just how important they can be,” she said.
Collie Senior High School year 8 science teacher Greg Varis said it was a great way to get kids interested into STEM careers.
“It’s good for the students to see the possibilities with STEM and the career options out there,” he said.
