It’s our favourite time of the week – a step back in time to reflect on the changes in our region, the faces and the fun that was being had during the month of July 1998.
There was a lot going on around the Collie region at the time.
A public meeting was organised to help combat the issues posed by the Mediterranean fruit fly in the area.
Almost 80 members of the Australian Metal Workers Union braved freezing conditions to man the picket line after discussions over the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement with Wesfarmers Coal broke down.
The future of the Collie to Donnybrook Cycle Race looked bleak after Griffin Coal dropped its sponsorship of the race, but local business Cardinal Contractors stepped up to ensure the race would live on.
Also at the time, the Collie Tourist Bureau was considering whether it had to close its doors on weekend’s after it had $5000 cut from its funding by the shire.
What do you remember about July 1998?
