Collie came together on Sunday, November 11, to remember the ANZACs on the centenary of the Armistice which saw the hostilities of the First World War come to an end.
The Collie-Cardiff RSL sub-branch hosted its annual Remembrance Day commemoration service in Soldiers Park.
Collie-Cardiff RSL president Gary Benton said it was important to remember the sacrifices made by those who fought in the war.
“100 years ago today it was over,” Mr Benton said in his opening address.
“The guns fell silent, the shelling ceased and the endless killing of our young men stopped.
“The price we paid as a young nation was immense. There was scarcely a family that did not lose a loved one directly or by close association.
“Right here and now our task is quite simple. We just have to honour the sacrifice and bravery of the many who left our shores to defend the cause of democratic freedoms.”
The commemoration service also included addresses from shire president Sarah Stanley and Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray, along with Collie Senior High School students Sophie Williams, Temilee Mumme and Brianah Briggs reciting the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’, the prayer ‘For the Fallen’ and the Last Post respectively.
The ceremony also saw a number of wreaths laid on the Soldiers Park cenotaph, on behalf of the RSL, Mick Murray MLA, the Shire of Collie, Collie Senior High School and other community groups, along with two wreaths laid in the memory of Victoria Cross recipient Martin O’Meara and Ronald Miffling.
