It’s our favourite time of the week – a step back in time to reflect on the changes in our region, the faces and the fun that was being had during the month of May 1996.
There was a lot going on around the Collie region at the time.
In the wake of the Port Arthur massacre, there were concerns about how the federal government’s new gun laws would affect the local Clay Target Club and the Sporting Shooters Association.
Negotiations between miners and Western Collieries on working conditions looked close to coming to a resolution after more than two years.
Also at the time, the Griffin Festival kicked off, with a number of creative activities and competitions taking place throughout the month.
On the sport side, there were lots of Collie locals picked for representative teams and Mines Rovers recorded a handy victory over Collie in the opening round of the SWFL season.
To cap it all off, Stephen Michael was picked as one of three inductees into the inaugural Nyoongar Sporting Hall of Fame.
