Australia Day Celebrations
On Saturday morning the West Arthur community gathered at our stunning Lake Towerinning for the annual Australia Day Breakfast.
The weather was perfect and the lake and surrounds looked beautiful. A number of people enjoyed a swim after the breakfast and, as has become the community tradition, many stayed for a day’s skiing or to catch up with friends.
After the delicious breakfast of fruit and a barbecue feast hosted and prepared by shire councillors and staff, the formalities began.
Young local, Sophie Telfer, delivered a wonderful Australia Day Address and told us of her recent adventures as a governess at remote stations across Australia and spoke first hand of the dry conditions in New South Wales.
Then the Shire president, Ray Harrington presented the Australia Day Awards.
The Darkan Sheepfest Committee won the Active Citizenship Group Award for getting the Darkan Sheepfest up and running in 2018 and beyond.
This was followed by an award to Amy Lubcke as the Young Active Citizen recipient for her work with Lauren Jackson of Collie and her work in Kenya with The Children of Maasai Educational Programme.
Amy has recently travelled to Kenya to share her nursing skills along with money and goods collected for the kids there.
The final award went to Heather Cook as the Citizen of the Year for her work behind the scenes over the years in a multitude of roles in the community and especially for helping raise funds for young local Jack Boyle and his family to help in his recovery.
The community is grateful to all the sponsors who enable us to enjoy this event and the beautiful breakfast for free every year.
Second Darkan Sheepfest
Be sure to attend the second annual Darkan Sheepfest on Saturday, February 9 at the Darkan Town Oval from 9.30am.
Thanks to the hard work and creative fundraising of the local footy boys to get the big lights on the oval the event can now kick on til late at night with music and lots of fun.
There is sure to be something for everyone at this re-creation of the good old-fashioned country show.
