It was a busy day at the Collie pool on Saturday with underwater hockey players from Collie, Perth, Bunbury, Margaret River and Busselton travelling to play in the annual Shane Digney Memorial Collie Cup for 2019.
The weather was perfect for a day of underwater hockey in the outdoor pool.
There were junior games and sub junior games played, as well as a senior round robin competition.
Players register in the morning and then teams were created with a mix of players to compete in a round robin style event throughout the day.
“It can be a bit hit and miss sometimes with one team ending up a lot stronger than others," Collie club member Hayley Digney said.
"We try to make them as even as possible but you never know how well players are going to work together as a team.
“We had a great turn out of juniors with the pool being a little overcrowded but it was a great opportunity for players from around the state to meet each other and socialise at the same time as getting in some good games.”
There were six teams created on the day with 20-minute games being played.
Sub juniors Jasmine Pike from Collie and Declan from Margaret River took out fairest and best, while Lachlan from Perth and Kya Digney from Collie went home with the fairest and best medals for the junior category.
Following the event a windup is held where medals and wooden spoons are awarded to the winning and losing teams. Scott Digney, who was part of the team who won the wooden spoon said he didn’t mind losing.
“It was my first wooden spoon after a lot of years playing so its not too bad to finally have one," Scott said.
"It’s all about being a fun day. We pride ourselves in being a family friendly club and we get together afterwards and play cricket and throw a frisbee and nerf ball. It’s great to see kids from across the state interacting and getting to know each other, who knows, they may end up in a worlds team together in the future.”
The next major underwater hockey event to be held will be the Margaret River Rumble in June.
