Proud moment
It was a proud moment for Collie people at the Keep Australia Beautiful National Sustainable Community and Tidy Towns awards in Smithton, Tasmania, recently, when Lauren Jackson was named National Individual Young Legend.
Lauren, Collie's Young Citizen of the Year in 2018, is an outstanding young lady, and it was good to see her acknowledged as the best in the Nation.
She has done fine work with the Children of the Masai Education Programme (CMEP) and with the South West Industry Road Safety Alliance.
As a young ambassador for Collie and for Western Australia, she couldn't be better.
Well done, Lauren, you have done our town proud.
Making history
Local historian Jan Wallace received fitting recognition last Friday night when the Local Studies room at the library was named in her honour. Jan has saved a lot of Collie history in her time, and without her dedication and persistance, the unit would not exist. She has worked quietly behind the scenes over at least four decades. Jan was also the first life member of the Collie Art Gallery, another area where she worked over many years.
New library hours
Assessing the usage of the Town Library has revealed that people tend to use it earlier in the day rather than later, so opening hours have been changed.
On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, the library will be open from 8.30am to 5pm. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, it will open from 8.30am to 12noon. With the library offering many events outside normal opening hours, these changes will give staff more time to prepare and set up for such events.
New number
Wendy Jarman has tended injured and orphaned wildlife in Collie and districts for many years. She is the "go-to" person when people find native animals. Wendy has a new phone number, so if you need to contact her, ring 0450 084 959.
Easter weekend
Easter falls in the middle of the school holidays, so there is sure to be a lot of traffic on the roads and highways. Please take care on the roads, be patient if traffic is heavy, and drive to stay alive.
Do not drive tired, take breaks when needed, and stay alert to the behaviour of other drivers. For those who have visitors over the weekend, the following information may help with planning.
The Museum is closed on Good Friday. The Museum is open as usual on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, from 9am to 3pm.
It is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. There is information on Facebook about Easter trading hours in Collie.
Easter travel
People wishing to take public transport to Perth for Easter need to be aware that the Saturday bus has been cancelled. The Sunday bus will return to Collie as usual. There may be seats left on the bus travelling tomorrow, Good Friday, but it would be wise to check, and to book your seat if possible.
Free skin cancer clinic
Collie Lions, with the Lions Cancer Clinic, are holding a free skin cancer check from 9am to 3.30pm on Sunday, May 5.
Treatment is very effective in the early stages, so do make an appointment by ringing Terri on 0429 903 372.
Recycling
Although the three-bin system has been in use for some time, it seems there is still some confusion about what should go into which bin.
The lime green lidded bin is for organic material - food and garden scraps, and anything else which will break down into compost, including newspapers should you run out of space in your yellow bin. Any cardboard which has made contact with food such as pizzas or other fast foods, can also go into the lime green bin, providing it is not waxed. Shredded paper can also go in this bin. Food scraps can be placed in the compostable bags which can be obtained from the Council office or the library, or they can be wrapped in newspaper.
The yellow bin is for paper, glass, cardboard and plastic items. Please remember to take the lids off bottles and jars when placing them in this bin, and do not put shredded paper into the yellow bin, as it falls through the equipment and can jam it.
The yellow bin is for "clean" items only, not any which are contaminated by food scraps. General rubbish which does not fall into the categories mentioned above goes into the dark green or red-lidded bin. Please take care sorting your rubbish, as if you put it into the wrong bin you are potentially spoiling the entire collection of waste.
Music
Classical music lovers may wish to help raise funds for cystic fibrosis at Peel Manor House on Sunday, April 27, when Opera at the Manor will be held from 12 noon to 3pm.
Performance by Divalicious, and a sumptuous high tea, with bubbles on arrival, will cost $85 per person, but proceeds go to a great cause, cystic fibrosis.
