Mother's Day
It was good to see so many families out and about on the weekend, either at dinner, lunch or afternoon tea, celebrating Mother's Day.
I was told lots also took the opportunity to visit the cemetery to remember the mothers who are no longer with us.
Remembering mum on Mother's Day is a good thing, but it doesn't hurt to think about how much your mother does for you throughout the year.
Remembering teachers
Collie children have had the benefit of being taught by some wonderful teachers through the years.
Miss Wilson is remembered by many whose lives she touched through her many years of service.
She is not the only teacher of Collie children who lived to be a centenarian. Miss Winifred Froude died this week at the age of 101.
She is remembered by at least one local septuagenarian who was taught by her in years 2 and 3.
Miss Froude transferred to the metropolitan area after some years in Collie, but she returned on a number of occasions for class reunions.
This is how I met her, not as a student but as a journalist covering the reunions.
She said she loved her years in Collie and that it was a joy to return and reconnect with her students.
It is easy to forget the impact teachers can have on their students.
Win Froude also produced plays for the Collie Repertory Club in the early days, including the winning play in the 1950 South West One Act Play Festival.
Biggest Morning Tea
Mark Thursday, May 23 on your calendars for this year's Biggest Morning Tea.
You can raise your cups for cancer at the Energy West Hall in Lefroy St from 10am.
Donations of savouries and cakes would be very much appreciated by the hard working people of the Collie Cancer Support Group.
Let's make it another huge success this year.
National portraits
The 2019 National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition has opened at the Collie Art Gallery, and runs until June 9.
Collie is the first stop on the NPPP tour after its opening in Canberra.

Save the Rowing Shed
A meeting to discuss the possibility of saving the rowing shed at Minninup will be held on Tuesday, May 21 from 6-7pm, at the Council conference room.
Water-based activities have been suggested for making a base at the shed including kayaking, paddle boarding, paddle board yoga, adventure race, fishing and rowing.
If you are interested, please go along and add your ideas to the mix.
Remember George
Our Community Garden's committee is organising a function to remember their late member, George Colvin, on Friday, May 31 at 10.30am at the Community Garden.
George was not only an enthusiastic contributor to the Community Garden, but also to many other local groups.
As his funeral was held in Perth, many could not attend. The function will be followed by a morning tea.
Motorplex
The first event on the new Long Circuit will be held this weekend, May 18 and 19.
The Ernie Hastie event will run over the two days. Entry for spectators is free, and the canteen will be in operation all weekend.
