South-West, Fremantle crews battle structure fire at Griffin Coal

Department of Fire and Emergency Services crews from around the state came together to contain a structure fire at Griffin Coal's Ewington Mine Site last week.

Beginning at 2.30am on Thursday, June 20, the fire hit a conveyor belt before spreading to several nearby towers.

Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service crews from Collie, Donnybrook, Eaton-Australind, and Fremantle battled the blaze throughout the morning.

Cockburn State Emergency Service personnel provided assistance, while DFES's South-West and Lower South-West District Officers were also in attendance.

The fire was brought under control at 5.23am, and extinguished later in the day.

The blaze was deemed accidental, with the damage bill yet to be confirmed.

Griffin Coal will conduct further investigations into the incident.

"Mining has recommenced at Griffin Coal," a Griffin Coal spokesperson said.

"Griffin Coal currently have contractors assessing the extent of the damage to the coal load out facilities at Ewington."
