Congratulations to Allanson lass Claudia Scoffern, who came second in the 2019 Rethink Waste Art Competition which was finalised this week.
Recycling waste materials, Claudia created a sculpture of a snotty gobble, an endangered tree species.
She was also required to research information about the tree.
It is good to see our local children involved with our environment, as it is their future.
Using recycled and repurposed material for garden art is part of this year's Keeping Up Appearances garden competition.
Please remember that entries close tomorrow at 4pm at the Council office.
Election day
It seems strange to refer to Saturday as Election Day, as the Local Government poll has been conducted by post, but it is the last day you can put your vote in if you have missed out on mailing it.
Ballot papers will be accepted at the Council office on Saturday.
Help Liam
As I write this, the weather forecast for Sunday is fine and warm, so let's hope that doesn't change.
The community has banded together to raise funds to help Liam and his family with their medical expenses following his recent accident, with a picnic in Central Park from 11.30am.
There will be live music in the Shell, donuts, popcorn, slushies, sausages, and the 2019 Anzac Tour group will be serving their popular curries.
For the kids, there will be a bouncy castle and face painting, so bring the family down to the park to support the Shepherd family and have a great day out.
Children's Week
Collie library staff and Our Community Garden will join forces once again for a day out in the garden tomorrow, from 10am to 2pm.
There will be story telling with Mrs Potts, an animal petting zoo, children can learn about growing their own food, and lots more activities.
This is a free event, and all are welcome.
A light morning tea will be available.
Lions Trash and Treasure
Collie Lions are holding a Trash and Treasure at the Old Ewington School on Saturday, November 8, and they are looking for donations of goods.
If you can help, contact Greg Bates on 0498 481138.
He can pick up goods, or you can bring them to the Old Ewington School on Saturday, October 26th and Saturday, November 2 between 8am and 10am.
Collie floods
The video on the 1964 Collie floods has attracted a lot of interest, and it is still showing at the Coalfields Museum.
Help is still sought to identify people and places in the footage.
Not just Collie
There is a lot of comment on social media about the rate of crime and break-ins in Collie, with people lamenting the lack of respect shown.
When the police reply to this pointing out that it is not just Collie, there is a lot of angry comment.
However, such things happen everywhere, not just in Collie.
It was not in Collie that the vehicle carrying the Nova crew and the Premier on a tour of the South-west had its windows smashed and items stolen.
It was in Bunbury.
Incidentally, it was good to see the crew in town to discover for themselves what a wonderful town we live in.
Watch out for maggies
Spring brings the nesting season for our native birds, including magpies.
Being dive-bombed by a maggie is not a pleasant experience, and for young children, can be a very frightening one.
There have been reports of incidents along the Karak Trail and in the Roberts Street area close to Amaroo school.
Be aware that the birds are in this area, and they are defending their young.
It is a sad reality that aggressive acts by humans towards the birds, lead them to retaliate.
In the perfect world, the birds would be left alone, and would then leave we humans alone.
Races
The Adventure Race attracted many to Collie last weekend, and the annual Collie Race day is looming on the calendar.
The speedway season is underway, with a full calendar of events.
And time is racing away as we head towards Christmas, and the busy social calendar it brings.
The days may be growing longer, but it seems time is getting shorter.
Show
The Collie Show is only a month away, so exhibitors should be getting their entries ready.
Markets
The Goods Shed markets will be in action at the Old Goods Shed on Sunday, from 8am to 12 noon.
There is always a range of stalls, with crafts, books, plants and a sausage sizzle.
