Melbourne Cup Celebrations: The Melbourne Cup luncheon celebrations in Darkan at the Rarebits Café and The Darkan Hotel were awash with colour, laughter and great food on November 5. The sweeps bought joy for some but the champagne and cocktails made up for the losses. Fashion in the Field saw some antics from the contestants and some great explanations of their outfits. Overall everyone had a great, long day.
Shire News: Congratulations to the newly elected West Arthur Shire Council members, Adam Squires, Graeme Peirce and Neill Morrell, who were sworn in prior to the Council Meeting on October 22. Councillor Kevin King was elected Shire President, and Councillor Neil Morrell Deputy President.
Bush Fire Info: The prohibited burning period commenced on the November 1. Only a limited amount of burning during this period may be carried out under special permit conditions. Contact your Fire Control officer or Shire for further info. Camping and cooking fires are prohibited other than in designated areas during the prohibited burning period. Designated areas include Lakeside Camping (for all camping and cooking fires) and the Shire managed area at the Lake and Darkan and Moodiarrup Sports Complexes (for gas cooking appliances only). A gas appliance, comprising a fire the flame of which is encapsulated by the appliance and which does not consume solid fuel, may be used at a person's home.

Darkan CWA Christmas Raffle: Tickets are now on sale for the annual Darkan CWA Christmas Raffle with all proceeds going to the CWA. Tickets are available from around Darkan businesses and will be drawn on Wednesday, December 18. Donations can also be made to the raffle and can be left at the West Arthur CRC.
