The Shire of Collie is holding it's annual Sportsperson of the Year Awards this weekend November 22.
The annual awards aim to highlight the sporting achievements of the Collie community.
The night, will also see the induction of Kobie McGurk into the "Wall of Champions".
Nominees are:
JL Mumme Sportsperson of the Year
Casey Jones
Casey plays hockey for Amaroo in the A-Grade Team, Boyanup Hockey Club in the Southwest League and was selected for the WA over 35's State Team. Taking out Fairest and Best for Amaroo Hockey Club and The Collie Women's Hockey Association, Casey was also awarded Best 1st Year Player for the Boyanup Hockey Club. Competing in the National Championships on the Gold Coast Her team won the Bronze Medal.
Beau Riley
Collie Speedway Fairest and Best for 2019, Beau was the top points scorer for the Production Sedan Division and overall highest point scorer for the Collie Racing Drivers Association. Beau travelled to Bairnsdale Speedway, Victoria to contest the State Title where he won to become Victoria State Champion. In Hamilton, Victoria, he was forth in the National Production Title. Back in WA Beau contested the West Australian Production Title and came 3rd . Beau is a low budget race driver still competing with a naturally aspirated stock engine against drivers with fuel injection engines. His skill as a driver makes him a highly respected member of the speedway community.
Junior Sportsperson of the Year
Jackson Broadbent - 14 years old
Jackson plays for the Collie Basketball Club, the WABL South West Slammers U16 Team and was part of the WA State Performance Program for Basketball. Jackson was selected for the WA Country U16 Men's Team that competed in Darwin. Dave Naylor, WA Basketball Performance Manager said, " A reliable 3 point shooter who also has a nice touch around the rim with his right hand made Jackson difficult for other teams to match up against".
Liam Cain - Go Kart Racing - 15 years old
Liam has consistently been named Fairest & Best during the 2019 Go Kart Racing Year. He has competed in 13 Open race events all over W.A. including Kalgoorlie, Geraldton, Albany, Esperance, Cockburn, Wundowie, Bunbury, Lake King and Wanneroo. Placing 2nd overall for the South Eastern Zone Championships. Liam volunteers at his local Club in Bunbury as a Grid Marshal. Liam is the 2019 West Australian State KA3 Junior Championship Winner.
Jorja Davies - Speedway - 15 years old
The 2018/19 season was one of the best for Jorja so far in her speedway career. Awarded the junior Sportsmanship Award for her efforts on and off the track. Second overall for the New Star Junior Make Smoking History Challenge. Throughout the season Jorja competed against approximately 20 different competitors who travelled to Collie from all around the State.
Shae Digney - Underwater Hockey - 14 years old: Junior Fairest and Best for the 2018/2019 season Shaes year took her to Cairns, QLD for the National Championships, she played in the Under 15 Team and also the ANZAC Under 19 Team, placing second in each competition, winning Silver with the U15 team. Shae also took part in various junior events throughout the state.
Seth Hinsey - Speedway - 16 years old
In a field of 25 drivers Seth was crowned "Prince of the Road" in a tough 20 lap race and 3rd in the Collie Top Stars make Smoking History Championship to end his Collie season. Travelling through WA Seth has participated well in heats and seeing himself through to finals in Karratha, Sharks Bay, Narrogin and Albany. Finishing 7th in the State against 48 other competitors. Seth was awarded the Drivers Driver award at Bunbury Speedway by his fellow competitors also finishing 3 rd on points at Albany and Bunbury Clubs on seasonal points.
Abbey Rose Irvine - Endurance Riding - 12 years old
In the last 12 months Abbey has completed 5 rides at 80km or above, including 160km and 120km. She has placed 1st Junior in two 80km rides and won Best Conditioned Award in those two rides. She placed equal 1st Junior in a 120km ride in Merredin. She is the top distance rider in WA and the Top Points Junior, while her horse is the Top Junior Horse in WA. Abbey Rose is Number 30 Junior Nationally - Distance and Number 17 Nationally - Points. Her horse id Number 11 Nationally- Distance and No 9 - Points. Abbey and her Horse, Mac, have qualified for the Tom Quilty Gold Cup, endurance Ridings biggest national event, which will be held in Collie, September 2020.
An-ne Pelser - Athletics- 12 years old
Last years winner of this award An-ne has had another great year, breaking local records in Shotput, Discus and 1500m Walking. First place at the Bunbury Interschool Championships in Javelin and High Jump and breaking the records for Discus, Shotput and Javelin at Collie Senior High School. At the State level, An-ne dominated in Discus and Shot Put and also placed well in Javelin and Long Jump. Representing WA at the National little Athletics Championships in Hobart An-ne had an overall finish of 6th in Discus and !4th in Shotput.

Paul Briggs - Speedway
Paul has been a volunteer at Collie Speedway for over 10 years and has been an integral part to many projects undertaken. Pauls involvement with the Corporate Hut Project, the New Track Gate initiative and the Street State Stock Title and countless other jobs at the venue despite a busy work schedule make him an invaluable member of the Club.
Josh Davies - Speedway
Josh Davies has been VP of the Collie Racing Drivers Association for the past three years and has been a committee member for many years prior. Awarded Life Membership this year as the result of many years of dedicated service to the Club. Josh has been involved in many projects including the Resizing of the Pits, the reshaping of the track, new water tanks, power pole project and other works.
