DUNSBOROUGH'S Wayne Barnett produced the round of a lifetime to take out the 2019 Kaefer Summer Open at Collie Golf Club last Sunday.
Barnett's dream round, which yielded 47 points, is believed to be a record for the Collie course and most certainly a record since the grass greens were introduced in the early 1980s.
The 22-handicapper was 11 strokes better than his mark when firing 83 off-the-stick for the 18 holes. This was a staggering 19 shots better than his Saturday opening round which netted him a mediocre 28 points.
Interestingly, Barnett's Sunday round of 47 was bettered by only one pair in Friday's opening four-ball event contested by 67 pairs.
His 36-hole total of 75 nett was three better than Trevor McCormick who played well, with rounds of 34 and 38, for a total of 72, enabling him to hold off Wanneroo's Ron Ballarine (35 and 37) in a countback for the runner-up prize.
Overall gross honours were again taken by Capel's Shay Tresize who finished with 65 points (30 and 35) for the 36 holes, with Waroona's Kevin Burton the runner-up on 57 (28, 29).
Saturday's 18-hole nett was won by Collie's Jamie Pitchers who set the standard with an excellent score of 41 to be two better than Narrogin's Stan Matveev, on 39.
Gross honours were taken by Damien Riley, of Mandurah, with a six over par score of 30 points.
Sunday's closing round nett was won by Don Dixon (Waroona), with 39, one better than Collie's Wayne Waywood on 38.
The closing round gross went to former Riverside winner Mike Lucas, of Harvey, with 29 points.
A field of 133 men contested the event, one of the best fields for some years.
Thirty-one ladies contested their two-day Summer Open and emerging victorious in a closely run contest was Jo-Anne Cooper, of Harvey, who held off fast-finishing local player Margaret Whipp, 73 points to 72.
Cooper had rounds of 34 and 39, while Whipp started well back on Sunday after a first round 32 before compiling an impressive 40 to close.
Overall gross honours went to Jo Jones (Bunbury) on a countback from Collie's Vicki Graham after both had finished on 49, with Jones' closing round effort of 28 points proving the difference in the countback.
Saturday's winners were Isla Lord (Capel) on 36 nett and Beth Deeley on 19 gross.
Collie's Nancy Lynn had a great closing round of 37 to take Sunday nett honours, with Mandurah's Shantelea Terry winning the gross on 22.
FRIDAY'S four-ball-best-ball stableford attracted a good field of 134 (67 pairs) and winning the Bushwalkers' trophies in a canter were John Wray and the irrepressible Phil Warburton.
The "Warbler" and Wray had 50 points to be way ahead of their nearest rivals, on 46, with second spot going to Craig Reeves and eventual Summer Open winner Wayne Barnett, on a countback from Alan Lannin and Ivan Dart.
Shay Tresize and Scott Healy were one over par when winning the gross section with 73 off-the-stick for 35 stableford points.
Local golfer David Laird provided a highlight of the event by posting an eagle three on the par five 10th hole.
Finishing just outside the trophies in the nett section were the following:
Graham Broad-Kim Melvin, Wayne Waywood-Margaret Whipp, Ian Annandale-Peter Coombs, Lesley Motion-Lynne Simmonds, Rod Simmonds-Jim Tyler 45;
David Laird-Mark Malatesta, David James-David Broadbent, Ryan Duff-Graham Illich 44;
Ashley Stewart-Jamie Pitchers, Eric and Ron Annandale, Ted Walton-Peter Wearne, Ralph Bilsby-Neil Motion, Joe Italiano-Brian Neale, Deb Callcott-Andrea Riggir, Nancy Lynn-Rhonda Annandale 43.
LAST week's 18-hole Tuesday leisure day event was won by Jim Larsen with 40 points, way better than anyone else in the field, with runner-up Dean Rakich on 35.
