The state government has thrown its full support behind one of the South-West's most exciting new projects.
In February, Premier Mark McGowan announced a $1.5 million commitment for the creation of a mural at Collie's Wellington Dam.
Using a surface area of 12,000 square-metres, the 'Mural Trails' project will set a new world record for the biggest outdoor mural by a single artist.
The project will see the chosen artist/s work closely alongside indigenous leaders, the Shire of Collie, business owners, and the wider community.
The Department of Premier and Cabinet recently opened the project's Expression of Interest period, due to close at 2.30pm on April 24.
Collie-Preston MLA Mick Murray said the project would showcase the region's indigenous heritage and natural beauty.
"This is a tender for a $350,000 commission that will attract worldwide attention - I don't think there's anything I need to do to encourage artists to express their interest," he said.
"I believe a lot of the initial criticism about this project was misguided, and people are increasingly supporting the concept - the McGowan Government is spending more in Collie than any other in history in a number of different areas.
"This is part of a wider plan to promote growth in an industry that will generate a lot of spin-off benefit for a lot of established and burgeoning businesses in the region."
A state government spokesperson added that local, national, and international artists were all encouraged to apply.
"The dam wall provides us with a huge canvas to make an iconic and potentially record-breaking statement - to help put Collie on the tourism map," they said.
"The mega-mural will complement our plans to turn Collie into WA's premier 'trail adventure town'.
"This is an exciting proposal that will give locals and tourists even more reason to visit Collie and we expect it will be a 'must see' destination for visitors to WA.
"Supporting the local tourism sector is just one component of our plans to grow and diversify Collie's economy and create jobs for locals.
"We will continue to work to ensure the long-term prosperity of the town."
