Round one of the South West Football League proved to be an entertaining one as the local competition enjoyed close matches and large crowds.
The round started in Margaret River when the Hawks hosted Bunbury Bulldogs.
The Hawks started well, but a goalless third quarter set them too far back to regain the lead in the last term.
The final score was 11.10(76) to 8.6(54).
The 2019 premiers picked up where they left off when they demolished Carey Park. An inaccurate first quarter by HBL kept the panthers within reach of the lead early. But that didn't last long as HBL piled on six goals in the second and the last term to finish with a big margin.
The final score was 17.11(113) to 5.5(35).
The HBL womens side celebrated a 16 point win over the female Panthers.
It was a different story at Hands Oval when South Bunbury hosted the Eaton Boomers. Eaton's Jarrod Humphries starred with five goals but the Tigers were on their heels the whole match.
The final score was 9.14(68) to 9.17(71).
The South Bunbury women's team had a field day against the Boomers, kicking nine goals and 14 behinds while Eaton only managed one point for the match.
It was a close match at Sir Stewart Bovell as the Busselton Magpies played Donnybrook.
Donnybrook struggled to find the goals in the first quarter, while the Magpies kicked three. Donnybrook edged closer in the second term, keeping the Magpies goalless and kicking two majors. Busselton didn't make the most of their opportunities while Donnybrook cemented their lead with one goal. The final score was 6.11(47) to 7.13(55).
Busselton's women's side were up against the new team on the block in Donnybrook. The Magpies were dominant and able to make the most of their opportunities with six goals and seven behinds. While Donnybrook couldn't kick a major, they managed to post seven behinds on the board.
The last match of the round was between Harvey Bulls and the Collie Eagles.
It was an entertaining match with just one point separating the teams at half time. Harvey got really close in the last term, kicking four goals to Collie's three but it wasn't enough to get them across the line.
The final score was 9.7(61) to 10.8(68).
