DARTS Australia’s organiser Mark Heinze nominated Collie’s Conan Ugle as the standout performer of the recent national under-25 darts championships in Launceston, Hobart.
Ugle had just triumphed in the pentathlon and Heinze said: “He has thrown some exceptional darts.
He’s not missing anything. He is very consistent and we’ll see him in the seniors championships down the line.”
Ugle was exceptional in the 501 rounds, amassing big points.
He did not win any of the specialised rounds but was in contention in all of them, finishing
the competition with a total of 279 points.
Second place went to Queensland’s Ricky Jones with 222 points.
The first event played on day one was a “Bull Shoot”.
At the end of the 30-minute session, the winners were Rebecca Smith representing Tasmania
with 4 points and Brad Thorp from Tasmania for the men with 10 points.
Ugle had tied with Thorp on 10 points but Thorp won the playoff 6–3.
Ugle and another top Collie player, Ijah Coyle, got into the men’s doubles second semi-final but were eventually downed 5-2.
Ugle topped the tournament’s averages with 22.8467 ahead of Kerry Allen (NSW) on 22.05513.
He was also declared overall men’s player of the championships.
Ugle and Coyle play in the Mandurah competition as well as Collie to get as much high-level competition as possible.
“That’s the way to improve,” Coyle said.
“You’ve also got to enjoy the game.”
Both dream of representing Australia and have tried out for the national team.
Ugle got through to the second day and both received encouragement and advice.
