FRESH from his debut pro-boxing win, ‘Lethal’ Liam Vernon is gearing for his much anticipated follow-up bout.
The 28-year-old middleweight will take on Queensland light heavyweight Dean Purdon on February 13.
Trainer Tommy Greenwood believes Liam has learnt a lot since his debut victory.
“Liam is training twice, sometimes three times a day – he is incredibly disciplined,” he said.
“He is a credit to Collie, the town should be very proud of him.”
In order to stay in peak physical condition, Vernon needs to stick to strict diet.
“He is extremely focused on the task at hand,” Tommy said.
“He has to stick to a clean living diet, which includes no alcohol.”
At training, Liam’s work ethic is evident – the fighter loses up to two kilos in one training session.
While he won his debut fight in just over a minute, Vernon knows this one may go to points as Purdon has never been knocked out in his career.
“I working on my speed and technique to giver me the greatest chance of victory,” he said.
“Every fight is a learning curve, so I will be better prepared this time.
“While I have been training on a similar regime, I have worked on my strength and conditioning to make sure I can go the extra rounds.”
Greenwood believes that what Liam lacks in experience he makes up for in work ethic and skill.
Vernon often will often head up to Perth for four, three-minute sparring sessions, before heading back down to Collie.
“He is going into this fight as an underdog,” he said.
“Liam has come through the youth clubs in Collie to fighting professionals.
“Everyone at the Roche Park Boxing Club are volunteers.
“Liam has great skill, it’s all about timing, foot speed and balance.
“He will wait and pick his moment.”
“Despite the lack of sparring partners and the tyranny of distance, he is succeeding.
Vernon will take on Purdon on February 13 at the Italian Club in Perth.
