NINETY-YEAR-OLD Collie local Gladys Fraser is on a mission to raise vital funds for the Cancer Council.
Ms Fraser lost her husband to cancer three years ago, as well as losing her son-in-law to the disease.
It was after these terrible losses that Ms Fraser decided to be proactive in raising money that will fund cancer research.
Ms Fraser, who has always been keen on crochet, decided to start crocheting coat hangers to sell to friends, family, and at local markets.
So far she has made over 700 hundred coat hangers, raising a total of $2400 for the Cancer Council.
“People love the hangers because they don’t leave any marks on their clothes.”
“I love making the hangers, and it’s for a good cause,” Ms Fraser said.
Ms Fraser shows no signs of slowing down with her efforts, with boxes of wool and coat hangers just waiting to be made.
“I’m hoping to make a few hundred more hangers,” she said.
Ms Fraser’s family have been proactive in helping with her efforts, selling the hangers to friends and at their workplaces.
“My daughter takes the hangers to sell at the markets in Augusta.”
Ms Fraser’s family donate the wool and hangers, and she donates her time and talents to creating the beautifully crafted hangers.
Ms Fraser is beginning to make more rugs with AFL colours to be donated to the Cancer Council and raffled off.
Ms Fraser has recently made a rug that will be raffled at a mother’s day raffle that she has hopes of raising more funds for the cancer council.
