IF YOU’RE out near the old Mandurah traffic bridge this week, you could be forgiven for thinking something was missing.
One of Mandurah’s most iconic landmarks, The Thomas Peel Memorial Wishing Well on the eastern side of the old bridge, was removed on Monday.
A City of Mandurah spokesperson said the wishing well has been put into storage while redevelopment works are carried out on the bridge.
“The City will consider relocation options in relation to the wishing well along with other social and historical heritage items in the area including interpretive artwork, seating, signage and old bridge timbers,” the spokesperson said.
The well was constructed in 1955 and its contents were donated to charity each year until it was covered with a iron disc and became a monument.
The disc detailed distances to international towns and cities as well as other places in Australia.
It commemorates the 1829 arrival of Thomas Peel and other pioneer settlers in the area.
