The Collie Coal crusher’s Nordic walking group are not letting the cold weather keep them in doors.
The group, which has been running for the past three year, meet at various locations within Collie including Soldiers Park, Lions Park, Roche Park, Minninup Pool, East Collie Bridge, and Harris River Dam.
Collie Coal crushers group member Di Davies said the group was originally trained up by an accredited Nordic walking coach to make sure the group had the right walking style.
“The poles are magnificent; they work the arms and upper-body.”
“There is quite an art to getting the motion right,” she said.
Ms Davies said besides the obvious exercise benefits of the group, they also have a good catch-up whilst out walking and often meet for coffee afterwards.
“We try and vary the walks but we generally walk for around an hour a time.”
“We always have a laugh and it’s a great social catch up,” she said.
Nordic walking involves using specially designed poles, not unlike ski poles, to glide through each step which results in more upper body and arm movement than ordinary walking would.
The group often make outings to visit other Nordic walking groups, including the Bunbury Nordic walking group.
“It’s so nice to be out in the open, we see the birds and flowers and the mist on the river in the mornings, and sometimes meet up with groups in Bunbury and Balingup for walks,” Ms Davies said.
The group has nine regular members, but always welcome new members to try out the sport.
“We would love more people to come walking with us even if they don’t use the poles,” Ms Davies said.
