COLLIE Agricultural Society Treasurer Les Whymark was honoured with life membership at the show on Saturday.
In his ten years with the society, Mr Whymark has taken up various roles including grounds person and secretary before taking on his current role of treasurer.
What started out as a neighbour borrowing his trailer, ended up as a near on ten year affiliation with the Collie Agricultural Society.
“My neighbour borrowed my trailer to take something down to the show and I went with her,” he said.
“Before I knew it I was helping on the barbeque and they were talking my membership fees, and that was it, I haven’t looked back since.”
Mr Whymark said he didn’t like being singled out when so many people put their time and effort into making the show a success.
“I was stunned to receive life membership,” he said.
“It’s not about one person a lot of people do a lot of work throughout the year to put this show together.”
“Some people do a lot of little things along the way to help things run a lot smoother.”
“I don’t like being singled out it’s hard to single out one person.”
The retired computer software designer created a program for the show that helped to categorise the entries.
The society hopes to forward the software on to other regional shows in the future.
Mr Whymark said he enjoys being part of the society and helping to contribute ot an important community event.
“I enjoy it, it keeps me mentally active, and I enjoy being with a group of like-minded people who love the show and are there for the community and to help teach children about agriculture and where their food comes from,” he said.
“Part of the reason I took up this position is to keep my hand in and keep doing what I was doing as a job which involved creating medical software.”
Mr Whymark said he has no plans to leave the society anytime soon.
“You have to keep active when you retire,” he said.
“I’ll never get away they will never let me go.”
