An Athlete Travel Subsidy Scheme has been introduced to support the transportation requirements of over 250 sportsmen and women across the South West.
The program has given athletes assistance to travel to numerous sporting events including the Under 17s Australasian Badminton Tournament, 2016 State Water Polo Championships and 2016 Country Camp for Under 16s Girls Soccer.
The initiative has supported athletes registered in a State Sporting Association aged between 13 and 21 years old.
Nationals Member for The South West Region Colin Holt MLC said the initiative took care of major travel and accommodation costs associated with training and competitions.
“This is a great initiative which gives financial assistance to our aspiring athletes who have to travel to either compete or attend training camps,” he said.
“It’s just another way that Royalties for Regions is supporting community sport – helping to develop our young and talented athletes.”
Minister for Regional Development Terry Redman MLA and Minister for Sport and Recreation Mia Davies MLA announced the funding recipients on Tuesday, July 26.
Mr Redman said the program would allow more athletes to participate in all training camps and competitions across multiple levels.
“Many regional athletes are excluded from State and National representation at sporting events due to ongoing travel requirements and associated costs,” he said.
“It is important talented young people are given representative opportunities regardless of where they live.”
The next round of funding opens on September 12 for eligible events with start dates between May 15 and December 15, 2016.
