The Power took on Blackwood in the final of the Division One South West Cup on Sunday at Australind.
Collie had brought a contingent of club members, sponsors and other family and friends to ensure strong support as they would try to reach the all impressive league and cup double.
The Power came out firing and gained control early before Blackwood came extremely close to going a goal ahead, missing an open net at around 10 minutes in.
Soon after (And after a couple of near misses from the Power themselves), Collie went ahead thanks to an own goal from the Blackwood keeper.
2 minutes later, Chris Vennitti was put through by a fantastic pass from Gareth Harker to make it 2-0. Collie held firm in the latter stages of the first half to take that 2 goal cushion into half time.
Although Collie controlled much of the second half, Blackwood managed to find the back of the net when an unfortunate missed clearance from the Collie defence from a corner trickled over the goal line to bring the score back to 2-1.
With this new hope, Blackwood pressed and caused the Power plenty of problems which culminated in what could have been a penalty to Blackwood.
However on closer inspection, the incident fortunately yielded a free kick to dependable Collie keeper, Leandro Bessa.
With the Power able to finally clear their lines and advance up the pitch, they controlled the game from thereon out.
Chris Vennitti won a penalty after a tackle inside the box was deemed a foul.
Up stepped Daniel Kearney and slotted the goal with authority to reinstate the 2 goal lead.
Collie finished 3-1 winners and sealed the league and cup double.
An excellent season for the men’s saw them drop just 10 points out of a possible 81 with 26 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses in both competitions.
On behalf of the committee and all members of Collie Power Soccer Club, we would like to thank our sponsors (Thomson’s Auto Parts, The Club Hotel and the Mumby Pub), families and friends for whom the success we have achieved this season could not be possible without your support, hospitality and generosity. We wish all the best and will see you all next year for season 2017.
