The Shire of Collie has made the decision to close the Shire’s premises occupied by the Coalfields Museum.
Shire of Collie president Wayne Sanford said the Museum Group has never had a lease over the premises which the Shire considered left both parties legally exposed.
Cr Sanford said it was a situation which the Shire could not permit to continue.
“On numerous occasions over many years, the Council has offered the Group a long term lease of the premises on the basis that the Group become incorporated; however the Group has resisted this option.” he said.
He said the Shire of Collie thought incorporation would resolve important issues for them and the group including custody and management of the collection.
Cr Sanford said it would provide grant and support opportunities for the group which are not available under the current structure.
This decision was taken after negotiations with the current group broke down.
“We know this will be controversial, however Council has a responsibility to safeguard the interests of the people of Collie.” he said.
Cr Sanford said the Coalfields Museum, including the collection, would be held under council control and would reopen when an incorporated body was formed to manage the museum.
