A 27-year-old WA man has been arrested at Perth Airport after WA Police allegedly discovered $4 million worth of methamphetamine in his luggage.
The WA Police Organised Crime Squad will allege the East Cannington man and another 23-year-old man from Perth, were being investigated for suspicious activities prior to the seizure on Monday.
"The East Cannington man boarded a flight from Perth to Sydney on Monday September 19, 2016, and returned to WA on another flight later that day," a police spokesman said.
"Both men were intercepted at Perth Domestic Airport.
"A search of the East Cannington man's luggage located about four kilograms of methylamphetamine."
Searches at properties in Perth and East Cannington later on the same day allegedly uncovered 500 grams of cocaine, $10,000 cash, $11,000 worth of casino chips, a pistol and ammunition and mobile phones and drug paraphernalia.
Another man from New South Wales was also arrested and charged in relation to the operation.
Serious and Organised Crime Division Detective Superintendent Dene Leekong said the meth seizure equated to 40,000 meth hits being taken off Perth streets.
The seizure follows a number of major drug busts in 2016 including more than 30 kilograms of methamphetamine being found during raids at two separate Perth hotels in February, more than 200 kilograms seized in a boat intercepted in Geraldton in May and $45 million worth of methamphetamine found hidden in a wood shipment from Africa.
Sewage tests in August revealed WA had a $2 billion a year methamphetamine habit - making WA the meth capital of Australia with a usage rate (3.8%) nearly twice that of the national average (2.1%).
